Demon Trappers (4) - Foretold by Jana Oliver
And the final of the series! Foretold! (In German Engelsfeuer). I read it in German where it contained 531 pages. Originally published in 2014.
Beck's mother is dying, so he and Riley have to make a trip to Sadlersville. Beck - who always tried to hide his past - now has to face a whole town full of unfriendly idiots who think he murdered two boys. Riley refuses to believe them and instead tries to find out who really did this... but the true murderer does everything to stop both demon trappers.
Meanwhile Ori has to hunt down those who were against his master - and protect Riley. Forced to teach her to kill demons with angel's fire, he doesn't make to many friends... and the worst hasn't even begun...
This book was wow! This is a really good conclusion.
First of all, to the characters. Beck's Mom is a very very interesting personality. That woman is a total asshat, but she's also... well, not totally evil. She's full of facets and I like how she turns out, and how she and Riley get on. Finally it is explained why Beck is who he is, why he got out of his home city and all the like. His story is very well done, even though Louisa is very different from her descriptions in the first parts. In the first parts she's bad-ass, now she's sweet and gentle – and always was. What. Da. Fuck? That doesn't make sense. At all. And it's a little weird she's married and pregnant and talks about Beck like she's in love with him.
The demon hunters rock. As does the series for it. I like the actress, she's nice.
I'm glad Simon slowly recovers. First, he has deserved to have a second chance. Second he has the potential for being a good person. And third it would be weird if it hadn't been a slow recovery. I like Sam, she will do him good. They'd be a great couple.
In contrast to Simi and Peter, who are cool and would be good friends; but they don't. Fit. As. A. Couple. At all. But that's fine because not everybody matches up right.
The business with the High School ball is very, very well done – normal, sweet, romantic. Realistic. As is the relationship between Beck and Riley. I love how that turned out. It's really really cute – and good for both.
Ori surprised me. It doesn't happen many times I have the total wrong impression of a character but him... I didn't get him at all. He's actually kind of nice. And this hell business is well done. As is the training and the final fight. My, that was something! Especially Riley's sword. I wonder how the Demon Hunters would have reacted if she did that in front of their noses.
The training for Demon Trapper's was well done – as is how Harper changes.
I like the ending very, very much. First of all, how Riley moves to Stewart – with her pet. And Beck's commentaries. And then the scene in the library – just perfect. The best ending that could have been. And I like that she knew Beck was going to ask her to marry her in Scotland and that he would become Grand Maester, but that none of that was actually written. It would have made it too perfect to be realistic.
It's nice that the necromancers and the witches work together. And the role Ozzy plays.
As for the ideas: They are original and detailed as always. The content is, except for Louisa, without fault. The style is tense and sophisticated as always. Well... that was it, basically. I conclude: A very, very good ending for a wonderful series. Like Button.
I give this book a star for ideas, style and for the ending.
