Selection Stories (3) - The Guard by Kiera Cass
Now that we know America's and Maxon's inner life, let's look at Aspen's guts: The Guard or as Selection Stories The Prince and The Guard (in German as Selection Storys Liebe oder Pflicht, in French Le Garde or as Sélection Storys histoires secrètes Le prince et le guarde) takes place between the Halloween Ball and America's chase in the woods of the castle.
Aspen Leger loves America. And America loves Maxon, the prince. But then, Marlee happens and suddenly America's in for giving her ex another chance... and all of that in Aspen's perspective.
I must admit, I have not forgiven Aspen for breaking up with Mer in the first place yet, so I'm not very thrilled they have a small affair (more or less). But it is well done and it makes sense in this situation (additionally this affair is in The Elite, too, so I got used to the thought). It is very nice and interesting (my favourite words, have you noticed?) to see how the servants and the guards slowly begin to fall for America. Even though this is a little weird. Hey, one of us is canned outside. Wow, look at that girl, she's going psycho! Guys, you really have your priorities straight. How about first not realising what actually goes on – the importance behind it – and then, when everything dies down, then the awe and surprise and that jazz? Would make more sense.
But I like Aspen's own life. His revenge on Celeste's parents and his relationship with her maids… interesting. Isn't it?
But there's a problem with this book. It's unnecessary. Superfluos, really. Because you don't really have any more information about the inner life of the palace or what will happen in The One.
In brief:
This means that I'll give a star for content, for style and for characters, minus one for the non-existing ideas.
