Selection Stories (1) - The Queen by Kiera Cass

The Queen, the first of the Selection Stories (Die Königin, La Reine). I heard it as an English audibook in the Happily Ever After bundle. Originally published 2014.

Amberly is in heaven: The boy she has fallen for at the age of seven is finally within her reach: Prince Clarkson, the heir to the throne of Illéa! But her future doesn't seem so rosy when she's in the palace, one of many beautiful girls and in no way special – or even worse: Especially bad. She's ill, but how can the prince accept an ill girl as next queen? While she sees what happens behind the curtain of Illéa's royal family, the rebels plan something...

I wonder whether Maxon really is their biological son. And why he doesn't have any siblings. Because if there is this emergency plan for the case that Amberly's barren, why didn't they then get a son and several daughters? This would have made sense on a political level, too. Because Maxon's father could have then married them off to other princes and forged new alliances.

Clarkson's twisted. But, in a way, I get why he is why he is. He sees that the relationship of his parents doesn't work out because they're always fighting – hard. And he concludes that he needs a wife who'd do anything he asks, unquestioningly. Which he finds in Amberly. Since she is mindlessly in love and is too empathetic and used to it, she doesn't question him in anything. Which is why their relationship can work out. I love how much insight she has on Clarkson. How well she sees through him, like in the scene with his mother.

The mother? She's really sick. I can't understand how she managed to marry two guys of the same family. Shouldn't the brother have realised what a b**** she is when she was still married to her first husband?

Well. This story was actually quite fascinating. Especially to gain more insight on Amberly and to understand how a woman so gentle could marry a man so cruel.

In brief:

So, I give stars for characters, style, ideas and content.
