And here's a book about... Arielle as a guy! Just making jokes: It's about meermen. Sam aus dem Meer (available in German only) by Isabell Schmitt-Egner. I read it, surprisingly, in German! It contains 130 pages and about the age... I'd say ten upwards (boys and girls - boys a little later, maybe). Originally published in 2012.

On a camping tour to the beach Laine discovers a cave with a strange inhabitant: A very sweet, naive boy. At first she thinks he's a run-away of one of these extreme sects. Until she sees him with a fishtail. Unfortunately, she is not the only one who knows about Sam's identity: Her enemy's boyfriend Bill finds out. Getting jealous - since Bill is secretly in love with Laine - he decides to get rid of our fishboy...

I like that book, it has a nice story and Sam is really cool. But I think the perspectives are hard to separate and the book should have been longer. First of all, because it is a very nice and tense story and second: to really understand the emotions of the characters it would have been better if you simply had more space in this book to show the reader. Especially Laine's feelings.

Laine herself is a caring but otherwise not very interesting person. SPOILER ALERT: Bill is just... well, stupid, actually, if he thinks it helps him to date Laine's arch enemy. Apart from that, he's without scruples. But he learns in the end, so it's not that bad. But still, he's not my favourite person. That would by Liz. you could could have made more out of her. I mean, in the end, when she finally finds out, too, she's first very cool, but afterwards... I mean, I'd like to know how the conversations between her and Laine developed. She's the kind of girl who'd make pretty funny commentaries about Sam.

So, let's put it together: I give a star for the ideas, and half a star for the content and half a star for the characters.
