Kane Chronicles (3) - The Serpent's Shadow by Rick Riordan
Last but not least: The Serpent's Shadow (in German Der Schatten der Schlange in French L'ombre du serpent). I read it in English, where it contained 401 pages. Originally published in 2012.
"All hail the mighty Ra, king of gods, lord of the sun!" - "Wheeeee! I like Zebras! Wanna cookie?"
With a senile sungod as strongest ally against chaos, you don't necessarily have the best chances to win. Meanwhile, the lord of chaos gets stronger and stronger, even the ghosts disappear... Desperate to find a way to save them all, Sadie and Carter have to take high risks - and loss. Their journey begins again: With a psychopathic ghost, not very helpful gods, a (boy)friend who's supposed to die too soon, a (girl)friend who gets blackouts in which she burns anything in reach... oh, and the world at stake.
Really, the Anubis-Walt thing was obvious.
It’s actually a nice solution to Sadie’s problems, even though I, as one of the boys, would have been… kinda disappointed. He’ll never know whether Sadie loves Anubis or Walt, neither of them will know whom she’ll choose. That has to suck, seriously.
Even for her.
The situation would freak me out – but her?
As for the Zia-Ra thing… nicely done, but a bit creepy if you think about it. At least for Carter…
Back to Sadie. She has quite the mouth on her, hasn’t she? And I love how Anubis and Walt want to tell her the whole time and she doesn’t let them and then is like Da fu???
Apropos words and names that end with u: Shu. (That bridge sucks, by the way.)
Shu. Is. Great. First of all, a god of the wind who is called Shu! Okay, that was not the idea of the author, but it's funny. But the whole Shu-situation was. And it was really really funny.
But the best ever was the kindergarten! And, as already said, the penguins. Ra himself and the reactions of the gods to their knew fearless leader were absolutely GREAT! And it worked – even Apophis was astonished someone could be more chaotic than him.
Apropos... how can a person be chaotic, if he or she (or it) has a plan? Isn't that kind of against the meaning of the word? On the other hand, it does fit, y'know: Apophis is so chaotic, he doesn't even always keep to the meaning of the word...
Apart from that, as usual: Gorgeous humour, wonderful ideas, no mistakes and a tense and really nice style.
In brief:
So: again, stars for style, humour, characters, content and ideas!
