Morganville Vampires (3) - Midnight Alley by Rachel Caine
And part three - Midnight Alley (in German Rendez-vous mit einem Unbekannten, in French Le Crépuscule des vampires), I read it in German, where it contained 313 pages. Originally published 2007.
Claire has a patron now - Amelie. The One And Only Vampire Who Counts. And a job Helping the insane and deadly vampire, who keeps the town running and could turn on her every second. And her friends have no idea. Eve's brother is dismissed out of prison and wants revenge for what his older sister did. Michael is the youngest Vampire in Morganville's history and that's the reason someone wants to see him dead. Shane can't accept Michael's new identity – even Eve has her problems with it. But what choice do they have but stick together? Especially when Claire's kidnapped. And it comes all down to Michael to save her.
This book is even cooler than part 2, Myrnin, an insane scientist who could burn Morganville down whenever he likes is fabulous. The way he is described makes him both adorable and dangerous, it's a mix that absolutely not fits into Morganville, where everyone has his place. But instead of making the book implausible, it makes it realistic. And Claire's new lessons of science and staying alive are very funny. Myrnin's one of my favourites in this series. You seldomly have a character who is really insane. Like for real - not just that everybody says he's insane and that he's actually not - or just a little bit. But Myrnin is really... you basically can't get much crazier than him.
Shane's behaving like an idiot. Seriously. Okay, he's got his reasons, but he still overreacts. I'm just sorry for Michael, who didn't really have an alternative. Because staying forever in one house is not an alternative. I like Amelie. She's ice cold, but cool in her own kind of way. And it's sweet how she's around Sam. Poor Sam, by the way. He really has the shit going to him.
There still is a little mistake in this book: In one scene Eve closes her door and shuts Michael and Claire out. Then Claire describes how Eve lets herself fall on the bed, how she takes her MP3-Player from the bedside locker and puts the headphones in her ear. But how can Claire see this through a closed door?
However, I give this book a star for ideas, characters, style and humour (SoGH).
