Charlotte and Thomas Pitt (6) - Bluegate Fields by Anne Perry

And  another part of the historical crime series! Bluegate Fields by Anne Perry (in German: different titles). I read it in English where it contained 274 pages. Originally published 1984.

The body of a sixteen year-old of higher birth is found in Bluegate Fields. Young Arthur, homosexually abused and drowned in clear bath water, has a background that is not so innocent as his look would let to believe... Pitt, cursed by his superior with a socially agreeable constable, has to find and capture the responsible. Soon they stumble over the murderer - but is he really responsible? Pitt cannot believe it. In his free time, with Charlotte's and Emily's help, he tries to prove Mr. Jerome innocent - and find the real perpetrator.

The characters were pretty well done, especially the police chef and the constable. The crime itself... you wouldn't think it fit into such a time, but of course, homosexuality was an issue there as well as today, you just didn't talk about it. Because it was a crime, just like murder.

I'm sorry for Mr. Jerome and the poor boy. None of them wanted what they got, but they had to stick to it and were judged for it.

It's nice Dominic showed up again, even though I'm not his biggest fan. I hope he finds a girl he can love – really love, not like Alicia.

The ending is very well done. Sad, but well done.

But I must admit that I didn't like this book very much. It's just so much thinking whether or not Pitt is wrong et cetera, et cetera. It's just a little overdone, for my taste. Apart from that, it's good.

I give it a star for characters, style and ideas.
