She was born in 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, and died  1817 in Winchester, Hampshire. Her novels gained importance after her death, especially after 1865 and in the 20th century. In her childhood, she and her six older siblings were encouraged by their parents to read and think. She and her only (older) sister, Cassandra, were sent to school, but after a nearly crucial disease and financial problems, they came back home. Jane spent most of her free time writing stories that would become Sense and SensibilityPride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey as well as other stories in notebooks. But she also attempted to do what ladies were supposed to do: taking care of the family, playing the piano, dancing etc. After her father died in Bath, the three woman of the family moved around a lot, until they settled down at Jane's brother, Edward, 1809. In her 30s, she published some of the books she wrote (Sense and SensibilityEmma, Mansfield Park and her "darling child", Pride and Prejudice) all under a pseudonym. The rest were published after her death by her brother Henry (like Persuasion).
